Imagine an evening of folk and classical music at one of London most spectacular venues, the Roof Garden in Canary Wharf, with the glittering lights of the city spread out below and the ancient melodies of Bengal filling the air above. This was Folk Lounge, one of Sahayogi Seva most beautiful and memorable productions.
The Beauty of Bengali Folk Music
Bengali folk music is one of the great unsung treasures of world music. Rooted in the villages and rivers of Bengal, it speaks of the universal human experiences of love, longing, joy, and sorrow with a directness and emotional power that transcends language and culture. The Baul tradition in particular, with its philosophy of the divine within every human heart, has inspired poets, musicians, and thinkers across centuries.
Folk Lounge, presented by Robi-Bharoti in association with Sahayogi Seva, brought this rich tradition to London audiences with exceptional artistry and care. Under the concept and direction of Sanjoy Dey, the evening wove together folk songs, classical pieces, and original arrangements into a seamless and deeply moving programme.
A Spectacular Setting
The Roof Garden at Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf, provided a setting of extraordinary beauty for the evening. With its lush indoor gardens and views across the London skyline, it created the perfect atmosphere for music that is rooted in nature and the human spirit.
Outstanding Performances
The evening featured outstanding performances by tabla maestro Pt. Shankha Chatterjee, whose rhythmic mastery provided the heartbeat of the evening, and vocalist Soma Ghosh, whose voice carried the ancient melodies of Bengal with grace, power, and deep emotional authenticity.
The Sahayogi Seva Vision
Folk Lounge exemplified what Sahayogi Seva does at its best: bringing world-class music to community audiences, celebrating cultural heritage, and creating experiences that connect people across generations and backgrounds. We look forward to more such evenings in the seasons ahead.
