On a warm July evening in 2019, something truly extraordinary happened at Woodbridge Hall in Woodford Green. The stage was set, the audience was seated, and then the music began. Chirontoni, meaning timeless in Bengali, lived up to its name in every sense.
An Evening of Rabindra Sangeet
NEOM presented Chirontoni as a celebration of the eternal genius of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. The programme was thoughtfully curated to take the audience on a journey through the full emotional range of Rabindra Sangeet, from joyful Baishakhi songs to deeply contemplative pieces about love, nature, and the human condition.
Singers Farzana Sifat and Sanjoy Dey brought extraordinary warmth and artistry to the evening. Their voices complemented each other beautifully, with Farzana bringing a classical purity to her performances and Sanjoy delivering each song with the emotional depth and storytelling quality that has made him one of the most beloved voices in the Bengali diaspora.
The Power of Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore wrote over two thousand songs, collectively known as Rabindra Sangeet. Each one is a complete world in itself, a meditation on beauty, on love, on the divine, and on the relationship between the human soul and the natural world. At Chirontoni, these songs were given new life, connecting a diaspora audience with the deepest roots of their cultural heritage.
What the Audience Said
The response from the audience was overwhelming. Many attendees, particularly the elderly members of the community, were visibly moved. For them, these songs were not simply music. They were memories: of childhood, of home, of people and places loved and lost. This is precisely what Sahayogi Seva exists to create, these profound moments of connection through music.
Looking Ahead
Chirontoni was one of Sahayogi Seva most successful and beloved productions. We look forward to bringing similar evenings of Rabindra Sangeet and classical Bengali music to our community in future seasons. Stay tuned for announcements.
