Some songs never truly fade. They live on in the hearts of those who heard them first in youth, who sang them at celebrations, who hummed them quietly in moments of joy and sorrow. Harano Sur, meaning lost melody in Bengali, was Sahayogi Seva tribute to these timeless songs of the silver screen.
Bengali Film Music: A Golden Legacy
The golden era of Bengali cinema produced some of the most beautiful film songs ever composed. Songs by legends like Hemanta Mukherjee, Sandhya Mukherjee, Manna Dey, and Kishore Kumar became the soundtrack to generations of Bengali lives. Harano Sur brought these beloved classics back to life on the stage of The Intimate Theatre in Palmers Green, London.
A Night of Nostalgia
The NEOM production, held on 1st June 2014, featured three remarkable singers: Gouri Chowdhury, Farzana Shifat Sopna, and Sanjoy Dey. Each brought their own distinctive voice and interpretation to the songs, creating an evening that was both a faithful tribute to the originals and a fresh and living performance in its own right.
The musical arrangements were handled with great sensitivity. Tabla maestro Ustad Yousuf Ali Khan provided rhythmic depth and energy, keyboard players Kiran Thakrar and Pretom Saha created the lush melodic backdrop, and guitarist Siddharth Singh added a contemporary warmth to the sound.
The Audience Response
The theatre was filled with an audience spanning three generations. For the eldest attendees, these songs were deeply personal, each one connected to a specific memory or moment in their lives. Harano Sur gave them the priceless gift of reliving those moments together, in community, surrounded by music and warmth.
For younger members of the diaspora, the evening was a revelation: an introduction to a rich musical heritage they had perhaps only glimpsed before. Sahayogi Seva believes deeply in this work of cultural transmission, keeping our musical roots alive and passing them on to the next generation.
Future Productions
The success of Harano Sur inspired many subsequent Sahayogi Seva productions. We continue to draw on the vast treasure house of Bengali and Indian film music for our programmes. Watch this space for our upcoming events.
